Global Fishing Watch
The introduction of the Global Fishing Watch Marine Manager Portal has revolutionised the way we can protect the 445,000km2 Ascension Island MPA.
The Portal combines biological and oceanographic data (such as temperature and salinity), as well as fishing and shipping activity, to support the management of Ascension Island’s MPA. We use the portal to spot trends and see what threats might impact Ascension Island’s MPA, such as illegal fishing and climate change.
The beauty of the Global Fishing Watch Marine Manager Portal is that it can be used by everyone. You can toggle through dates on the time bar at the bottom to see how things such as sea temperature and fishing activity change over time within the MPA. You can even track individual vessels traveling around the outside of the MPA to see who is fishing and where they are going!
